Why is there a sudden burst of interest in the forensics field?
Huge numbers of people are becoming more interested in forensics, especially over the past few years. I wondered if you think this is a genuine interest (and they are aware that it is not glamorous) or a result of the media. I am a human osteologist and I am sick of people telling me they want to go into forensics because of CSI. I do not understand how people can choose their career based on a TV series. Could someone enlighten me please?

You’re right, the media exert an undue influence on shallow, impressionable people. But there’s a little more going on. Detective stories have always fascinated people. It’s fun to watch someone solve a problem, especially if you can see the clues and try to solve it along with them. New tools are now available. But I think we’re seeing some really good side effects of this mania.
First, I hope it makes people think twice before they act badly, as they appreciate new tools to help get them caught and punished.
Second, the shows portray intelligent people in a positive light, helping reverse that old nerd stereotype that’s so damaging to society and our gene pool.
Third, the shows often bring up in a serious way genuine moral and societal issues and deal with them in a balanced, respectful way. I think it helps people think about the issues and appreciate more the views of others. It helps break down other stereotypes when they portray a race, nationality, occupation, religion, or other prejudicial dimension in a non-traditional way. I think that has tremendous value.
Don’t be too alarmed by the early appeal of forensics. Not everyone in my generation became a fireman. But interest in a career that requires use of the intellect and of a good education is a very good direction. The basic skills are those of mental acuity, knowledge, reasoning, and problem solving. They are excellent tools to have in pursuing any career of value.
