The Tv Show “lost” As An Ethical Business Model

As the popular ABC Television Series “LOST” nears the conclusion of its seven year run the fans of the show have figured out that whatever is happening on the island is a repeating cycle going back to ancient times.  We know this cycle revolves around two archetypical characters that end each eon with an epic battle.  The purpose of the island seems to be a prison for the character “Cerberus” who has possessed the dead body of “John Loche”.  Cerberus is being held against his will on the island by a deceitful character known as “Jacob”.    The main desire John ‘Cerberus’ Loche has, is to leave the island and take anyone who wants to leave with him.  Ironically, Jacob and his followers are able to leave the island, mostly for the purpose of guiding by deceit new people to the island who will be candidates for the replacements for himself and his followers.

For most of the series the viewer has been given the impression that Jacob and his followers are ‘good’ and the dark smoke called Cerberus now in the form of John Loche is ‘evil’.  I would like to look at this situation objectively and make some predictions about what it means if the writers and producers of “LOST” have John ‘Cerberus’ Locke win his freedom or Jacob be allowed to continue his rule of the island.

It is no coincidence that the character Cerberus has been portrayed as ‘evil’ and by design he takes the famous name sake of John Locke.  The 16th century philosopher and physician who is regarded as the father of liberalism and a central influence for the writers of the American Constitution was John Locke!  Prior to his physical possession of Mr. Locke, Cerberus appeared mostly as the dead Dr. Christian Shephard who was a top doctor and father for Dr. Jack Shephard who is the lead candidate to replace Jacob.  It seems that Cerberus has been denied physical life by Jacob until now.  What is wrong with John ‘Cerberus’ Locke wanting his life, his freedom and his pursuit of happiness as he has stated recently on the show?

At whose expense does Jacob recruit candidates to serve as potential replacements? Jacob drives a very hard bargain. Jacob has manipulated the lives of each main character to guide them to the island, or he has made an unethical deal with various characters that has required that they sacrifice the life of themselves or a loved one in exchange for their confinement to the island as a ‘protector’ of the island.  Many times Jacob has seemingly ‘saved’ a character from death or misfortune prior to their arrival on the island, only for those characters to find out that the ‘altruistic’ act of Jacob was just a manipulation to get them to the island and sometimes an out and out ‘deal with the devil’ situation. (Re: Characters like “Hurley”)

So here we are: The epic battle for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness with John ‘Cerberus’ Locke and his followers on one side, and the altruistic collectivist controlling side lead by the biblical persona of Jacob.  The producers of the show have made great efforts to lead viewers to support the characters and endeavours of Jacob and his followers, while portraying Cerberus and his followers as misfits, criminals and unethical types of people.

I don’t like the way Cerberus has been portrayed because it is very consistent with the constant media and political attach we observe in our real life world on capitalism and liberty.  If the producers allow Cerberus to lose yet again to the collectivist and altruist ideals glamorized so far in the characters on Jacob’s control, then it means that those people in power of our media and government have chosen for us the side of collectivism and altruism and the season’s final episode will be a direct smear in the face of those of us who fight for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness!  This is a smear that I will not let stand unchallenged.

Yet, as the series draws to an end, if the producers start to reveal the side of John ‘Cerberus’ Locke as the true ethical path humanity needs to follow for survival.  If they let Cerberus finally win his freedom from Jacob at the end of the show, and Cerberus is allowed to leave the island and reveal himself to the rest of our world as a force of freedom, then I would let this be a signal to every freedom fighter that the tide has turned in our favour.  A win of freedom for Cerberus would mean that the producers believe that true liberty and capitalism is possible if we learn to see thru the dark smoke the altruistic mythology has blinded mankind with for centuries!

Season four of Lost was a fine return to form for the series, which polarized its audience the year before with its focus on The Others and not enough on our original crash victims. That season’s finale introduced a new storytelling device–the flash-forward–that’s employed to great effect this time around; by showing who actually got off the island (known as the Oceanic Six), the viewer is able …
